How To Know When To Make a Move

This is probably the cheesiest stock photo I could find.  However, it really does describe how I felt today, and how I tell so many people to analyze a decision that's on the horizon.

Today I was sick to my stomach, and felt like I was 10 years old all over again.  I felt like wanted to throw up, then wanted to eat a Dairy Queen Blizzard, but I didn't, then wanted to go in the corner in the fetal position.

Yes, this is extremely dramatic, but today I finally pulled the plug on a decision I had been toying with for a while, I signed the contract and started making speaker payments for my first ever event.

2015 was a year of knocking out things I didn't have experience with, speaking and selling from the stage, writing and publishing my first book, and putting together a few more courses.  All of these things seemed so daunting and impossible just 12 short months ago, but now they're all a piece of cake, relatively speaking.  So you're right, it's not like I can whip out another book tomorrow.  However, the task doesn't scare the crap out of me, and send me to Dairy Queen begging for a Cookie Dough Blizzard.

This is my motto for life, and it's something that has changed everything for me.  If I'm not feeling like this on a frequent basis, challenged, and freaked out that I'm pushing myself too far, I realize I'm way more comfortable than I should be.

Your goal in life is easy.  Learn to start getting really comfortable with feeling uncomfortable.

I think this is one of the easiest ways you can test yourself on an idea or just something you want to move forward with.  Does it scare the crap out of you in a good way?  Does it make you a little sick thinking about because you're so outside of your comfort zone?

This, right here is where major growth happens.

So what's the difference between this sick feeling is good versus this sick feeling might end up with you in jail, which is a big no-no?

  • First, do you know this will enhance your life, brand, or business?  If the answer is 'yes', then you probably already know this is something you need to move forward with.  If it's not going to do anything to move you forward, then spending your time and effort pursuing it, just isn't worth it.
  • Second, are you going to regret this later in life?  Listen, I would do ANYTHING else than put together the details of an event this large.  I've questioned myself if I've gotten a little over zealous on the numbers that I believe I can hit.  However, I know if I let another year go by without doing this, there will be regrets, and the further this goes down the line, the further it will go from my mind, which means the more likely this will never happen.

Now how do you take the bulls by the horn and finally roll with this?

  • First, write down the absolute worst that can happen.  For me, I could have absolutely no one register, and I have to cancel the event, and I'm out a few thousand dollars.  I can live with that.  It would hurt my bank account, and my ego, but I can live with that.
  • Second, write down what's going to happen when you knock this thing out of the park.  There's a reason why you're interested in this, and why it's on your radar!  I was just listening to a podcast with Kevin Costner the other day, and he talked about how his life changed when he finally learned to listen to that little whisper and stopped giving a damn what anyone else thought about it.  I think it's probably time we all followed suit.

So with 2016 on the horizon, let's hear what your big, make your stomach churn thing you're going to take on.
