[VLOG] What Do You Create A Business Around?

I get asked this question all of the time. When I was working in Corporate America it seemed to be more black and white. I didn’t understand all of the gray that was out there. Either you created a product and worked really hard to get the patent, or then you either sold the product to the public or sold the product to a company. Or you were an entrepreneur, and that meant you opened a business, and sold something there, or even a restaurant.

When I started exploring the whole entrepreneur world, I realized that there are a bazillion shades of gray on what you could do.

You do have to be passionate, but you do have to be careful about it because sometimes when you wrap a business around a passion it can take the passion from it.   I would really recommend that it is something you’re passionate about, or at least something you love.

I always say in my other videos that behind every business should be a passion and a really solid why that drives you and go with that. I would definitely go with something you’re passionate about and a gift that you have. I think so many times we get so caught up in our own world, that we don’t realize that when something comes really easy to us, or it’s something we just love doing, that not everyone is on the same page as us. We don’t really realize what a gift it is that we have.

I always love to use the example of organizing. I would pay someone all day long to help me organize because I am horrible at it. However, I have my own set of gifts. I love figuring things out, and I love putting together businesses processes where that might lose people. So instead of taking those things that come easy to you for granted, start thinking about how could you package that up. Can you create a course around it or a consulting service around it? Or you could even put together a brick and mortar business.

Don't be frustrated if you're still lost about what your passion is. Sometimes it’s really easy to ask the question of ‘what’s your passion?’ and there are people really confused on what their passion was even about. I’ll be honest because I suffered from the same thing. When you’re in Corporate America too long, you just become numb. I didn’t value myself at all. I was going through the motions. I was doing enough to progress my career, but I had no desire, love, or passion for it. I just let anything that was inside of me die.

I think the thing you have to do is to start cultivating any curiosity that you have.   For me, my very first business outside of real estate was around my passion of animals. If there’s anything that makes me tick, it’s rescuing a dog. Then I was able to take that feeling of your dogs are like your kids and was able to utilize that in a pet sitting business. I could then instill that same value within my clients and the people I hired.

It was my first passion, and I took that and made a business around it.

So what is it that interests you, or that excites you and start there.  One thing I always tell people is if you could have two hours in your day or even your week where money and productivity didn’t matter, what would you spend that time doing? You also can’t choose to be numbing yourself out to a television or mindless surfing.   What is something that would make you truly happy or come alive?

If you’re still lost on what it could be then think back to your childhood. What was something that you absolutely loved doing? It was a point in our lives where we had no cares in the world, and we spent our time doing what we truly loved. What did you enjoy doing?

I could look back at my childhood, there were very specific things that were important to me, and I really loved doing them. That’s what I’ve now created my businesses around. I loved creating, and I loved helping people. I loved to figure out ways I could make money at school. And now that I get to help people figure out how they can live their passion, it’s truly amazing how the whole linking happens.

There are so many things that you can think of. Just because you’re not in the black and white of what you think you can create, it doesn’t mean you can’t create a business around it.

Start connecting with that passion and desire and love. Start putting your mind there, and you’ll be amazed at the opportunities that come up. I don’t care who you are or what your background is, anything is possible when it comes to becoming an entrepreneur. You just need to start putting one foot in front of the other.
